17 people, 'cause we're cool like that

So there were quite a few less than last week (it was 24 for the official count) I'd like to attribute that to two things:
1. Homework and Engineering tests in the coming week
2. Fewer old nerds attending

Aside from that I deem this a success because most of the people attending had not seen the movie before. Also its always a blast to make fun of ye olde computer graphics and shenanigans.

Mission: Impossible

Alright, this week fulfills one of my primary purposes for Mt. Everest Movie night: to show films that are/were popular when they came out but we might not have seen because our age when they debuted therefore they'll be new and awesome to many people attending.

When Mission: Impossible (PG-13, 1996) first came out I was all of 7 years old and in second grade. My movie viewing of the year included 101 Dalmations, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Space Jam and although those movies mostly hold a special place in my heart there were also these blockbuster movies (Jerry Maguire, Independence Day, and Mission: Impossible among others) that were entertaining, quotable, and in some cases spawned sequels that all flew over my head as a 7 year old.

So to sum things up the entire reason we're watching Mission: Impossible is a selfish one. I never saw it as a child and wonder now what it was all about, especially with M:I 3 having come out only a few years ago, being the self-centered person I am I also assume that other people might have a similar problem, and even if they have already seen it, who would give up the chance to see a pre-scientology Tom Cruise and be reminded of all the reasons we loved him? Or as Tommy would remind you, explosions are fun to watch.

See you at the top of Mt. Everest.

P.S. I would like to make a note here about who selects movies for Mt. Everest movie night. Whereas he hosts it in his room Tommy has final say over what movies are shown. This means there may be a few weeks where-in a movie will be shown that I won't attend because I'm actually not fond of/opposed to the movie personally. It also means that movie selection usually goes a little like this:

-Caitlin gathers movie suggestions from people, old box office charts, books, podcasts, and teh interwebs.
-Caitlin researches movies that she hasn't seen herself on IMDB as well as asking her secondary movie selection base their opinions of the movies (if they've seen them)
-Caitlin determines where a legal copy of this movie will be obtained for viewing (thank goodness Evans lets us check them out now so we don't have to get NetFlix)
-Caitlin uses said research to create a list of potential movies and reads/presents it to Tommy
-Tommy vetos any movies he doesn't like/want to show as well as asking questions about movies he hasn't heard of or seen

So basically Tommy has the final say, no questions asked, on the movie we see. Caitlin has a small amount of wheedling power, but this is mainly with movies she loves and neither Tommy nor Brandon (Tommy's roomate - his presence has greatly diminished Caitlin's selection power... At least Tommy still needs her feminine influence on movie selection and her sweet promotion powers) has seen, i.e. North by Northwest.

More than 20 peeps, yay!

Okay I have a confession to make, I've actually forgotten how many people attended last week. I want to say 24 and I know for sure it was more than 20 people. Which just goes to show with each successive week we are gaining attendees. General opinion of the movie and experience was positive. I think having a comedy was certainly a good choice.

sorry I'm relatively uninspired in this post.

Week three: Office Space

Time for a comedy!

We've been watching too much pseudo serious stuff, it's time for something all comedy. Thus Office Space (R, 1999) which is one of those films, like Airplane and Shrek, that is really much better viewed in a large group and then quoted for all eternity.

I think with the popularity of The Office, Office Space often gets mistakenly compared to or mistaken as the same thing. Although some of the humor is similar, the difference in styles between them and the fact the The office is a television show and Office Space a movie makes the two quite distinct.

If you come I certainly hope everyone enjoys the movie.

-Caitlin

P.S. As a side note those of you who know me know I really try to minimize the number of Rated R films we watch, because really there are plenty of excellent films out there with less sketchy content. Therefore you would all be surprised to know it was me who suggested this movie, this happened for two reasons:
1. I mistakenly thought it was PG-13 when I mentioned it to Tommy and he thought showing the movie was a wonderful idea. I normally would have done better research and discovered my error before suggesting it but
2. I've actually seen this film, and although it wasn't my favorite ever I thought it had all the elements to be a wonderful movie night/crowd film. The question now is if I just happened to see a television version, or it I wasn't paying attention, or otherwise why I didn't notice when I saw it the use of words that would've tipped me off to it's rating.

19 people, yay!

Okay this is incredibly late, but I had two tests last week so I was studying.

Although I had to leave early to camp out I had a reliable source take count for me and 19 people total made the hike up Mt. Everest to watch Live Free or [decease] Hard with us. Not only is this 5 more than the week before (which could really be attributed to several old nerds who attended) but my favorite thing is that the people who came last week were for the most part different than the people who came to see Princess Bride. This means we're being successful in reaching a variety of audiences, although ideally I would like to have everyone come every week.

The other exciting news of the week is that Tommy acquired a TV last Sunday and was able to show the movie on dual screens which really makes any seat in the room a good one.

The only downside? I had to leave after half an hour and I've never seen the movie before, so it's been bothering me all week! I'll just have to watch it some other time.

Live Free or [decease] Hard

The fourth movie in the series, this 2007 film is relatively recent but qualifies for movie night for a couple reasons:

1.)Despite its excessive use of shenanigans, this is an action movie that we enjoy watching even if it is totally unrealistic.

2.) After watching a movie last week that actually involved the concept of true love, we need to appeal to the guys in the dorm with many explosions. Of course the girls in the dorm are a bit more open minded about what movies they enjoy and therefore also have fun watching a good action film.

3.) Despite what I may make you think, I do have a co-host for this movie night and this is one of his favorite movies. Whereas my favorite movie is completely unsuitable for a movie night, his is a perfect pick so we should definitely show it.

4.) Being a relatively recent film people have heard of it and thus will come without excessive use of persuasion on the part of my co-host and myself, thus when they leave satisfied they trust our movie judgment just a little more.

Unfortunately whereas this will actually be my first time viewing this film I cannot provide a more descriptive reason we're showing it, but I hope you do come and enjoy it.

Attendance: 14 people

As you can see from the above number, the first Mt. Everest movie night went pretty well. Most satisfying is that everyone in attendance, including a few people who'd never seen the movie before, really enjoyed it. Even with some well timed "That's what she said"s (Andy...) and a bit of line quoting no one felt their movie watching experience had been ruined.

After show you-tube videos included the song from Portal, Saving Col. Craig, and the videos edited to make the Count from Sesame street sound pretty sketchy. All of these were also well received. A post about next week's movie should be up in the next few days.

Week one:The Princess Bride

This is one of my favorite movies, especially for showing at a movie night. The Princess Bride has something in it for everyone and thus almost everyone I've ever met who has seen it has loved this movie, or at least liked it well enough to see it more than once or twice, as long as there is a bit of time in between each viewing.

This is the movie shown at the very first Mt. Everst movie night and for good reason too, my co-host being a male refuses to show any "chick flicks." Being a girl myself and not wanting to be the only girl watching a movie in a room full of boys the universal appeal of a movie with pirates, evil princes, some well fought revenge against a six fingered man, and twue wuve is exactly what I wish more movies had, so I didn't have to sit through another F-bomb filled Inside Man or try to trick my co-host into showing a musical. There's not much more to say about this film without repeating myself, except to say that I hope those of you who can come see it with us, details are in SoFo.

For a full list of the permenantly banned movies check out our Facebook Group (I might post it here eventually) there might be movies not on the list that will never be shown because one or more of the hosts hate them (musicals, supertrooper, etc.,) because despite how much we love them they aren't well suited to a popular movie night setting (Casablanca, Bridge on the River Kwai, Sweetland,) or because they simply wouldn't be done justice on the equipment we use to show our movies (The Dark Knight, look for it at Mark's Movie Mondays)

Sincerely,
Caitlin

A note about our second year

This Sunday marks the beginning of the second year of Mt. Everest movie night. Of course if you've never heard of our little movie night you might be wondering why it's special enough to blog about, thus I present you with what makes us different, what I look for in movie selections, and why I spent all summer planning for a weekly movie night that has no application whatsoever to my future.

Mt. Everest movie night is unique because, among other things, it is held in a primarily freshman honors dorm. This means that although it is in its second year the audience for Mt. Everest is new and the reputation needs to be rebuilt. Needless to say the overarching plan for movie selection this year is to show films during first semester that build our reputation as a movie night you can trust to choose a variety of good movies to show. Second semester when we show movies that are lesser known, a regular crowd of viewers will have grown to trust our taste in movies enough to come even if they've never seen Finding forrester and they don't really know what it's about beyond Sean Connery's awesomeness.

On that note I have a vision for Mt. Everest Movie night beyond that of my co-host (in whose room we actually show said movies.) My vision is that this will not be just another movie night where the movies shown have been seen by most of the audience within the last few years, nor is it to introduce my friends to the "more artsy" independent and foreign films of the world. I hope to use Mt. Everest movie night to watch good films that may have been popular when we were younger and our favorite movies were Beauty and the Beast, Angels in the Outfield, and Toy Story and we could have cared less about all those boring "grown-up" movies like The Fugitive or Finding Forrester. We missed an entire generation of films as children that were rated, PG-13 and R, or that had storylines we weren't interested in. Perfectly good films that are worth seeing, but perhaps weren't loved enough to earn the cult status of Donnie Darko, the Monty Python Films, or Star Wars.

This doesn't mean that Mt. Everest movie night will never show Iron Man, Transformers, Blazing Saddles, or Back to the Future (all films that have been or will be shown.) It is the reason though that I spent my summer getting suggestions from parents, my older brothers friends, and reading Roger Ebert's 1996 Video Companion Guide trying to find films that although older, will be fresh when shown to a group of college kids this school year.

Finally a note about the format of this post. Each week I hope to have a post about the movie we are watching that Sunday and why it's been chosen as well as a post after the showing with a quick summary of the success (or failure) of the night. I am continually looking for feedback and suggestions so if you hate a movie and want to skip a week, tell me about it; if you have a movie to suggest, tell me about it; or if for some strange twisted reason you've decided to stalk me... well maybe I don't want you to tell me about that. Anyway I think that's enough about that.

Ta-ta,
Caitlin
